Chocolate And Zucchini

$12.88

Clotilde Dusoulier is a twenty-seven-year-old Parisian who loves to share her passion for all things food-related—recipes, inspirations, restaurant experiences, and above all the lush pleasure to be discovered in cooking with the fresh ingredients found in her local Montmartre shops. But her love affair with food was born not in her mother’s Parisian kitchen; it blossomed in San Francisco, where she moved after college and became infatuated with the new world of tastes on offer. When she returned to her beloved France, her passion for food inspired her to share her culinary exploits in her blog ChocolateandZucchini.com, which has garnered Dusoulier more than 4.5 million hits a month and an enormous following of 140,000 unique visitors each month, half of whom are from North America. In Chocolate & Zucchini, Dusoulier provides a glimpse into the life of a young Parisian as she savors all that the city has to offer. An endearing companion, she shares her cooking philosophy in the form of more than 75 recipes that call for the natural, healthy ingredients of which she is fond (such as zucchini) and the satisfying tastes she craves ( such as chocolate). The Los Angeles Times calls her recipes simple, charming, and fun. Appetizers such as Tuna and Green Apple Mousse or Cumin Cheese Puffs, sandwiches and tarts like Tomato Tatin, soups like Chestnut and Mushroom, main dishes of Mustard Chicken Stew or Hand-Cut Steak Tartare, and desserts like Chocolate and Caramel Tart or Yogurt Cake can all be found alongside menus for entertaining, as well as tips for throwing cocktail or dinner parties with French flair. Illustrated throughout with Dusoulier’s evocative photography, Chocolate & Zucchini is the book for anyone who has journeyed to Paris and can still recall the delicious tastes and aromas—or for those of us who only dream about them.

Recipes

$22.01

2006 IACP Award Winner: General Category! Preface by Martha Stewart. Recipes. Cooking all comes down to the recipes — those ingredient-by-ingredient, technique-by-technique, step-by-step instructions. In Recipes, Susan Spungen, founding food editor and editorial director for food at Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia for twelve years, presents her own easy, unfettered ideas for cooking simple food rich with freshness and flavors to share with family and friends. Recipes is organized by technique, explaining why sautéing is great for two or four but when feeding a crowd braising is the better choice. Prepare focuses on the basics, from making a vinaigrette to roasting garlic and peppers. Chop includes not just salads, but gazpacho and a Provençal sandwich that requires knife skills. Sauté explains how to pan-sear fish and make a layered omelet. Grill shows proper techniques for cooking scallops, asparagus, and steak over an open fire. Roast offers the perfect roast chicken and a roasted squash salad. Bake features a variety of pizzas as well as mushrooms baked in parchment paper. Simmer and Braise coaxes the most flavors from soups and lamb shanks. Finally, there’s Indulge, a selection of desserts from simple brownies and peach melba to a fruit crisp and a rich chocolate cake. Susan believes that one of the most pleasurable parts of a meal should be the making of it. Recipes encourages home cooks to become confident cooks.

Home Baked:

$17.46

Two classics in a single volume! Britain is in the grip of cake mania. The Women’s Institute, spiritual home of the iced occasion fruitcake, reported that interest in its baking courses was up 60 per cent in 2008; one online retailer said it was selling a cookie cutter every 15 minutes; and the nation is to be galvanized into action with the start of a National Baking Week. It is entirely to be expected, of course: in the current climate of gloom and doom, what more therapeutic activity could there be than baking? So Grub Street is reissuing two timeless classics in one elegant, redesigned hardback volume filled with delightful illustrations by Georgie Fearns. George and Cecilia’s two little baking books Home Baked published in 1956 and Home-Made Cakes and Biscuits published in 1963 were listed by Elizabeth David in a Times article in 1971 as her favorite books on bread making. The books contain advice on equipment, flours to use and to avoid, baking and rising times and temperatures and everything the home baker can possible want to know. There are recipes for wholemeal bread, white bread, English tea breads and continental coffee breads such as croissants, Danish pastries, panettone, German apple cake and Russian Easter bread. The section on homemade cakes and biscuits contains recipes for basic cakes, fruit cakes, chocolate cakes, nut cakes, spicy cakes, pastries, biscuits and yeast cakes as well as icings and fillings.

Many home cooks are stuck in a food routine that includes preparing the same 10 or 15 recipes over and over again, week after month after year. 2500 Recipes, the ideal guide to escaping that routine, offers 50 recipes each for foods ranging from snacks and sandwiches, to chicken and ground meat; from shellfish to grains; from winter vegetables to summer fruit. There’s also a special section of dishes for special occasions. Consider this common scenario. There is a chicken waiting to be roasted for dinner. Stop. Go the chapter that has 50 recipes for roast chicken. Each one is different. Most important, there are sure to be a few that are more interesting than that old reliable one prepared out of habit — too often a bad habit. Without doubt, there will be dozens of recipes based on ingredients commonly on hand to please cook, family and guests. There’s even a chapter with 50 scrumptious recipes for burgers and hot dogs. Each one is sure to delight. All the recipes are quick, and most use just a small number of ingredients. But each recipe includes a power flavor that’s easy to obtain and easy to incorporate into cooking routines. Examples include oils, herbs, olives and sun-dried tomatoes. There is also an entire section on basic cooking techniques and preparations, featuring seasonings, marinades, sauces, dressings and machines.

Vegetarian Meat & Potatoes Cookbook

$10.17

The Vegetarian Meat & Potatoes Cookbook is for all those who say, I could never go vegetarian. I’m a meat-and-potatoes person. But eating vegetarian does not have to mean giving up hearty, filling food. With more and more people cutting down on or eliminating meat, vegetarians and non-vegetarians alike need a source for meatless meals that are as flavorful as their meaty counterparts. With that in mind, Robin Robertson has developed 275 recipes for mouthwatering, soul-satisfying dishes that feed the hunger without the meat. The Vegetarian Meat & Potatoes Cookbook will change the way people think about vegetarian food, a cuisine not usually associated with indulgence. Everything is comfortingly familiar: Mushroom Barley Soup, German Hot Potato Salad, Chili con Frijoles, Layered Vegetable Lasagna, Broiled Eggplant Teriyaki, Shepherd’s Vegetable Pie, and much more. Roasts, burgers, steaks, stews, meat loaves–they’re all here, and they’re all delicious and all healthy.
