Meatloaf: Bat out of Hell $8.49 Never one for understatement, the aptly named singer known as Meat Loaf (aka Marvin Lee Aday) teamed with operatically-minded pianist-composer Jim Steinman to produce a bombastic slab of 1970s classic rock that has become one of the biggest selling albums of all time. Fueled by Steinman’s epic compositions, Todd Rundgren’s grandiose production, and Meat Loaf’s own soaring vocals, the singer’s 1977 debut BAT OUT OF HELL elevated the rock-opera genre to appropriately theatrical heights with its extravagant orchestration and a melodramatic narrative celebrating teenage rebellion. This episode of the CLASSIC ALBUMS series recounts the making of this monumental work through interviews, archival footage, and live performances of album tracks such as You Took the Words Right Out of My Mouth, Two Out of Three Ain’t Bad, and, of course, the adolescent opus Paradise by the Dashboard Light. |

Recipes For Our Daughters $13.96 This special cookbook is more than a collection of recipes; it’s an act of love. When Naomi Neft’s and Cynthia Rothstein’s daughters graduated from college and moved out on their own, the mothers found themselves besieged by frantic phone calls asking for cooking advice: What’s the recipe for their mothers’ famous roast chicken? How long do eggs last in the fridge? What should they do if they oversalted something? What’s a quick and easy dish to impress a date? Called to action, Naomi and Cynthia decided to gather all their families’ recipes into one book. Then they asked other women—women who would make strong role models for their daughters—to share their favorite recipes. The result is this joyous book. Recipes for Our Daughters includes more than 200 delicious dishes, conveniently divided by subject, from Appetizers to Desserts. Inside you’ll discover such mouthwatering fare as Beverly Sills’s Dutch Babies, which will make your kitchen smell like fresh-baked heaven; Donna Shalala’s healthy and irresistible Tabouleh; Nicole Miller’s scrumptious Summer Rolls; Peggy Fleming’s moist and mouthwatering Salmon in Parchment Paper; Olympia Snowe’s delicate Baklava; Marlo Thomas’s sinful Chocolate Soufflé; plus the authors’ own contributions, including that famous Roast Chicken and Gravy, Low-Fat Kugel, six variations on the legendary Tuna Salad, Quick and Tasty Meatloaf, Guilt-Free French Fries, and very guilty Hazelnut Meringue Cake. Featuring practical cooking wisdom essential for the burgeoning chef— buying and storage tips, troubleshooting if a dish is too salty or spicy, and what to substitute when you’re missing an ingredient—Recipes for Our Daughters is the perfect gift for mothers, aunts, and grandmothers to pass along to the ones they love. There’s even space at the back of each chapter so you can personalize the book with your own favorite recipe! |
